I thought it is important to comment on the K-E diet. I understand this is a feeding tube diet that is adopted mostly by brides-to-be in an effort to lose 10-20 lbs. in short order for their wedding, usually in about 10 days.
As a medical doctor and expert in weight loss, I consider this a very dangerous alternative to common diet programs. In the K-E diet a feeding tube is inserted into the nose and down into the stomach. The person is then hooked up to a slow drip of nutrition that totals 800 calories per day.
I consider this diet very dangerous for two reasons. First, the feeding tube presents an aspiration risk. There are two types of aspiration risk. The first is a sloppy placement of the feeding tube. This means that the feeding tube can inadvertently be placed in the lungs rather than the stomach. If this occurs, nutrition including fats will be sent to the lungs, which have no way to dispose of the liquid.
The second aspiration risk which is more likely, is that the fluid from the stomach can be regurgitated into thee lungs, much like acid reflux. This is a real danger as the feeding tube that runs from the nose to the stomach keeps the lower esophageal sphincter open 24 hours per day, when it is usually closed during period when you are not eating. Because the sphincter is open you are more likely to regurgitate into your lungs.
Aspiration of stomach contents, or in this case, the nutritional formula for the K-E diet can cause severe inflammation in the lungs and even worse, adult-respiratory-distress syndrome which has a significant death rate.
Even if you are successful with the weight loss of 10-20 lbs. in 10 days, it is extremely unhealthy, as you will lose muscle with the fat loss. Typically people who lose weight that quickly will feel fatigued, sluggish, and irritable hardly the energy level you need for a wedding or honeymoon. It is not uncommon with that kind of rapid weight loss to have electrolyte imbalances that can cause heart palpitations and fainting.
If your fiancé loves you, he will love you 10-20 lbs. heavier. Trying to lose 20 lbs. in 10 days is dangerous and I strongly recommend against the KE feeding tube diet.
